This is a new website and is definitely a work in progress. Currently, it’s just my voice you hear but, in the next few weeks, I hope to have some native Hawaiians record some of the common Hawaiian words and phrases included on the tables here. So, as they say, stay tuned and check back often! We would also like to add other aspects of Hawaiian culture. Some of my patients have offered to provide pictures of vintage Kona and some of the old Hawaiian families. My wife, Carole, has suggested that we have videos of hula dancers with an explanation of the hand and body movements included in real time.

We would love to have your suggestions as well. If you have anything you would like to contribute to the site or things you’d like to see here, feel free to comment.

Aloha!

    Aloha David,
I was hoping (fingers crossed) that you might be able to help me out with a question that I have regarding an Hawaiian phase. I am a Big Island resident who has just lost a dear friend. He also lived in HI for many years then to return to our shared home country of Aotearoa (New Zealand).
I have had some artwork (from Hawaii) commissioned for him and I would like to inscribe it with “Until we meet again friend”, but I only know the ‘literal’ translation for this – A hui hou kakou -& Hoaloha. But I don’t know the correct way to put this together, or if there is a more appropriate phase for saying this (as there often is in our native Maori dialect).

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this, and I hope to hear back from you if possible.

    Regards,
    Lou Lou.

  3. According to one of my patients (Walter Kahiwa, 95% Hawaiian and a Kamehameha Grad)

A hui hou ai kane — “eating friend”/special friend
A hui hou hoa pili—very special friend–someone you would lay down your life for

There are other additions you can use as well depending on the level and type of friendship.

  5. Are the audio pronunciations workign on the web site? I see a column that says there is an audio mp3 but when my cursor goes over the words nothing happens.

    Thanks – Scott

  6. Hey Scott,

Sorry for the problems! We seem to have lost some of the functionality during a recent software upgrade and the work around has taken longer than expected (mainly, because I have a day job!). I appreciate your interest. We hope to have it back in order within the next few days.

    Best wishes,
    DK
